Football (Soccer)

Australian football, better known to Americans as soccer, was probably developed from English football and rugby. Football probably arrived in Australia before rules developed in England, where the idea originated from. A commonly believed theory is that Tom Willis, who also created the rugby Australian rules, created the current Australian rules in Melbourne in 1858. Willis was also one of the founders of the Australian Football Club and created the first ten Australian rules from the game played in the colonies. Willis created the new game to keep cricketers like him fit during the winter. In 1858, the first football game by Australian rules was played. He proposed that a committee be appointed to make rules for the sport. Four people, including him, were chosen to create the current ten rules. Representatives of various football clubs revised the Melbourne rules and called the new sport the Victoria Rules football.
