Camels were not just used for trading. Camel and horse racing were also sports played in
ancient Africa. Horse and camel races were put together during the Douz Festival. Arab
horses and Mehari camels were raced. Riders would wear traditional dresses. People would
watch in the tribunes, with the vast Sahara behind them. The rider would sit in front of
the hump with their legs crossed around the animal's neck. Camel racing was often held
during holidays and was always a fun sport to watch, not to mention the amazing speeds
camels could reach! Camels ran so fast that if you stopped at an oasis, you'd find a
camel race in progress! That's because they'd have already arrived to the next oasis by the time you'd have got there. The Islamic conquest of North Africa probably did not change sports
in the area because Muhammad specifically allowed horses and
camels to be raced.
