[Abraham Lincoln] [Companies with slaves today] [Companies against slavery today] [Similarities from back then and now][African American Abolitionists]

Slavery was a large problem back in the 1800s, and it is still is a problem now, but it is not as large as it used to be. In the 1700-1900s, slavery was very common. A large amount of slaves could have been found in the United States. The United States had about 698,000 to 3,954,000 slaves. Slaves were most common in the states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, and Virginia. The slaves grew the majority of the American crops for export. They focused on the hot climate crops like cotton and tea can. The geography of the United States affected the location of slaves greatly. Most slaves could have been found in farmlands, by water, or in plantation fields. Due to the fact that back then they had to grow crops, the labor was different. Nowadays, hired maids or butlers usually work indoors, serving the owners of the house. However, they get paid their fair share. Also, much of the farmlands and plains have been replaced with houses, shopping centers, or other important and large buildings.

Most slaves were people who were considered "colored." White people saw themselves as being superior to colored, or black, people. Colored slaves were treated terribly. They would sleep in basements, work hard or else get beaten, and get no money at all. Some work that slaves back in 1800s did was agriculture, working for army men, cooking, cleaning industries, and trading. They also had to make clothing, grind cereal, carry water from the outdoor pipes into the houses, and went to war. Why did people in the United States need slaves? Some people needed slaves because they had too much land to control, they were lazy, or it could be that they did not have the time to do the work. Slaves did the same work that everyone else in the lower classes of society did, but were not given pay for their services. These days, there is much less slavery in the United States.
