Geography and economy [Battling Enslavement][Countries who abolished slavery][Europe today][Geography and economy] In past European economy most people were farmers, fishers, miners, cattle herders, sheep herders, and pig herders. This economy affected the amount of slaves and what the slaves did because the people in Europe either just needed extra help, or were just too lazy to do it themselves. When you own a large farm, it is sometimes hard to maintain the entire farm all by yourself, so the Europeans would buy slaves to do their work for them. The geography of Europe greatly affected the amount of slavery in European countries. In the 1700 and 1800 hundreds, the people of Europe used slaves to do daily chores like herding the sheep, pigs, or cattle. Slaves were also used for farming, fishing, cooking, and cleaning. The most amounts of slavery were first established on the coasts of Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, and Switzerland because Europeans were buying and selling slaves in Africa. From there on, the slaves spread throughout Europe and became apart of everyday life.
