The Shocking World of
Pollution Have you ever wondered how pollution happens? How that lake becomes a ditch? Or maybe how that bottle of Dr. Pibb your holding devastates the environment? Learn the answers and much much more by using the text below to answer the Quizzes that can be found by clicking here Water Pollution (THE TRUTH)
Water is often drawn from rivers, lakes, or the ocean for use as a coolant in factories and power plants. The water is usually returned to the source warmer than when it was taken. Even small temperature changes in a body of water can drive away the fish and other species that were originally present, and attract other species in place of them. The warm water can deplete oxygen levels in water and in doing so kill many animals that would otherwise lived on. This is one of the many ways we pollute our water. Hazardous wastes are chemical wastes that are either poisonous, capable of producing explosive or toxic gases, capable of corroding steel, or flammable. If not treated or stored correctly, hazardous wastes can pollute water in our ocean. Fertilizers used to accelerate the growth of plants in farms and gardens may be dumped into water. In the beginning, these fertilizers encourage the growth of plants and in water. Unfortunately, when the plants and algae die and rest underwater, microscopic organisms decompose them. In the process of decomposing, these microorganisms take up oxygen that is in the water. Oxygen levels in the water may drop to dangerously low levels that animals in the water, like fish, die. Oil spills arte a major problem for all the animals in the oceans.
Air Pollution (HOLD YOUR BREATH)
Air pollution is caused by factories which increase the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere as well as fueling smog. The same effect is caused by cars and killing of plants (deforestation). Fires also play an immense part in this problem and cause global warming as well. These problems can be solved by using thing like solar an hydroelectric energy sources as well as hybrid cars and metal instead of lumber.
