All living things depend on solar energy.  Solar energy can also be used to generate electricity and can be stored in batteries.  Sunlight is an energy source that is available in different amounts every day.  Sunlight has been used in various ways since the start of human history to meet energy needs.  Advanced technologies are used to bring the power generated from sunlight through small-scale solar powered collection sites that are currently in use.

Flat plate collectors use sunlight to heat a house and its water.
Sunlight can also be caught in photo voltaic cells.  A photo voltaic cell is made of a thin, small wafer of silicon about two inches each square.  Solar powered cars may become the hit of the future.

Solar power is good because it doesn't waste electricity, and energy is available whenever the sun shines.  Solar power helps reduce electric bills.  Solar power is free, and you can get as much of it as you want.

A drawback to solar power happens at night or on cloudy days when sunlight isn't available.  When there is no sun, people have to use electricity and other energy sources.  These energies can cause noise pollution and emit many gases.
