Genetically Modified Organisms
Expansion of GMO Crops

Did you know that many food items that are most likely in your kitchen may have geneticallycereal modified organisms?  Soda, breads, cheese, and beer are some of the foods that are currently using genetically modified organisms.  There are most likely genetically modified organisms in highly processed foods, such as cereal and vegetable oil, and a lot of corn and soy beans are grown with genetically modified seeds.   (And you thought you knew what was in that extra bowl of cereal!)

GMO (genetically modified organisms) are expanding very rapidly around the world.   In 1995 the acreage of the GM crops was only 4.3 million acres.   In 1999, only four years later, it was 10 million acres.  The world wide sales of genetically modified crops has sky rocketed since 1995.   In 1995 the estimated sales of GMO crops was 75 million dollars; in 1999 it was an astounding 2.3 billion dollars.  Even though European countries have banned the use of genetically modified organisms in their food, the United States currently allows GMO food to be sold without labeling it as genetically modified.  So, chances are that that delicious hot dog bun may contain some sort of GMO product.
