SCIENTIFIC NAMES

In 1758 a Swedish biologist named Carl Linnaeus developed a system to name plants and animals.  The system based upon the Latin language, uses names  in a format

similar to  our surname and first name, e.g. (John Brown). The Genus (surname) usually starts with a capital letter whilst the Specific name (first name) is written in lower

case. E.g. Killer Whale – Orcinus orca
