Mussels and Clams

How to make the ID: pearly thick or thin shells.

Its Color: Clams are whitish or grayish in color, mussels are dark in color.

How it reproduces: female deposits eggs on the top of the water and they drift to the bottom.

Metamorphosis: No metamorphosis

It is food for: fish and mammals.

Its food: organic debris and plankton.

Indicator: Mussels are sensitive to low dissolved oxygen. Clams are a little more tolerant of pollution.

Length: Mussels can be up to 9 inches in diameter and clams are small (no more than 1/2 inch in diameter).
