Alias: Hellgrammite

How to make the ID: two large mandibles, filaments along the abdomen, a pair of short tail filaments used for grabbing things. It has six legs.

Its Color: brownish to black with a dark plate behind the base of the head.

How it reproduces: female attaches eggs on overhanging vegetation; when eggs  hatch, the larvae fall into the water.

Metamorphosis: Complete

It is food for: larger game fish.

Its food: other aquatic macroinvertebrates.

Indicator: intolerant to pollution

Length: up to 3 inches.
