The 2007 ThinkQuest Team, CSI: Cahaba Student Investigators

We never thought much about how everything we do affects our environment, but now we think differently about how our world needs kids to be involved in keeping the water, land, and air CLEAN! Humans, animals, and plants must have water to survive. Benthic macroinvertebrate monitoring helps us to know if the water is clean. We surely didn't know that catching these little insects and learning about them could be so exciting. Some of us were on the ThinkQuest team last year. This year has been even more fun because we were able to learn about our topic by actually doing a project. We've learned that it's one thing to talk and learn about problems in the environment, but it's another thing to actually do something about it.

Three different schools are represented on this year's team. One team member is from a city in Florida with a population of around 35,000. Four team members are from Alabama and live in a small town of about 1,500 people, and one team member is from Slovakia. His city's population is about 10,000. Our towns and cities are very different, but surprisingly alike. It is pretty interesting that Marek lives in Slovakia in a former gold and silver mining town. Sarah, Daniel, Breanne, and Jaylon also live in a town that began as a coal mining town. The town is trying to get tourists to come and visit the river. A lot of people in Marek's town depend on tourism for income. It is a very historic place for people to visit and people also use the city's waterways for recreation. Allie's city is a tourist city and people use the waterways for fun and recreation, too. This shows us that even though we are living in different parts of the world, we have much in common.

We chose the name CSI: Cahaba Student Investigators because we are very curious and like to ask questions. We knew we would make great detectives. Keep reading and you will find out more about us. Then, get ready to get this investigation started!

Profile of the Detectives

SarahHello, my name is Sarah. I am in fourth grade. I do most of the drawings for our website. I enjoy shopping, talking on the telephone, and hanging out with my friends.

I am a cheerleader and I play on the softball team in our town. I have a big sister and a little brother. I have two dogs and one horse.

My favorite subject in school is math. You can probably tell from this website that I love art, too. My favorite part of our project was disturbing the water when we went to Caffee Creek. I like being part of the ThinkQuest team because it is fun and you get to learn more about computers. I like having the opportunity to teach other people what I already know. I had lots of fun making this website and I hope you enjoy it, too!

DanielHi, my name is Daniel. I am part of CSI: Cahaba Student Investigators. I am 10 years old and I enjoy being on the ThinkQuest team. I like playing football, basketball, and soccer. I play football for the WB Tigers. I have two brothers, two dogs, and a cat. My favorite subjects in school are P.E., reading, and science.

My job on the team was to draw, write, and research. My favorite part of the process was recording the data. I learned how to catch and identify macroinvertebrates. When we went on vacation in March I was able to use what I learned to find macroinvertebrates in a creek in Tennessee. Of course, we didn't use a net to catch them. We picked up rocks in the stream and found many stoneflies clinging to them. The water was very swift. I showed my family and some of my friends who went with us how to do it, too. It was fun!

JaylonHi, my name is Jaylon. I am a member of CSI. This is my second year on the ThinkQuest team. I enjoy sports, reading, math, science, and physical education. I have been in the Bibb County Children's Theater for five years. I am very competitive.

Last year our team created a site called, "Ride My Car". It was fun, but making a website this year has been even more fun. We had a good website last year, but this year we wanted to make our site more appealing to kids. I think we've done a great job.

I did some of the writing and I drew some of the pictures. We all helped with the monitoring when we went to the river. We took turns doing different jobs when we monitored the water. I liked disturbing the water.

AllieHi, I'm Allie and I am in third grade. I love to play softball and my position is first base and pitcher. The name of my team is the Braves. I have 2 brothers, one is older than me and the other is younger. My favorite thing to do at home is swim in my pool. My favorite subject in school is math because it makes me think and it's fun. I helped with this project by sending information about the Gulf of Mexico and the surrounding bay. You could say that my backyard is the Gulf because I live so close to it!

MarekMy name is Marek and I am 9 years old. I am in third grade. In Slovak this is written "Chodim do 3 triedy". My favorite subjects in school in order of preference are math, reading, P.E., music, art, science, shop class, and English. The only class I don't like is Slovak, my native language! I am in a club for LEGOS and medics. I have a brother and one dog. My Mom is a nurse and my Dad is an EMT. I like exploring different places. My job on the team was to find information about watersheds.

BreanneHi my name is Breanne. I am in fourth grade. I was on the ThinkQuest team last year. I have 2 brothers and no sisters. My favorite sport is softball. I am very tall. When I grow up I want to be a nurse like my mom. I like to read. I have a mini Chihuahua and a wiener dog. We named the Chihuahua Minnie and the wiener dog Oscar Myer Weiner. My favorite thing about making our website this year was going to the river. I helped with the research for the site. I helped with the drawings, animations, and photos for our site. I also did most of the typing. That's me!
