Eating food is important because without food you would not have enough energy to live. The food digested ends up in your blood and is carried all though out the body to different cells. The digestion process is when food is broken down into smaller molecules so that the food can build and help cells also provide energy.
The food that you eat goes though a tour of the body. It all starts with a bite of food, like pizza. Your teeth tear of the big crusty, yummy crust off. Then the saliva comes in and breaks down the food in chemicals a little. As it does this, your tongue moves around the food to get it ready to go into the esophagus. After a while it pushes some food into the esophagus part called bolus. Than a special door opens called the epiglottis. It lets air come in and out and it makes sure food goes down a tube.
This tube called the esophagus is like a pipe that squeezes food slowly down into the next phase in the stomach. The stomach is connected to the end of the esophagus.
The stomach has a number of jobs it stores the food you've eaten, break down the food into a liquid mixture, also it empties the liquid into the small intestine. The stomach is like a mixing bowl, acid comes down from every inch of the stomach and this is called gastric balls of foods into liquid so it can go through the small intestine. The small intestine is a long tube that's about 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches (about 3.5 to 5 centimeters). Inside the small intestine, liquid and chemicals break down the mixture of food even more, so the body can get all of the vitamins and minerals protein and fats. The intestine can do this with some cool helpers called the liver, gallbladder, and the pancreas. These organs sand juices into the small intestine so that it can help break the food down , But the leftover food that the body can not use has to go throw one more trip. Into the large intestine it is bigger than the small intestine. The large intestine just has one more chance to squeeze out all of the juice out the mixture of food. Like I mentioned we always have waste that the body can not use, and it comes out of the appendix and after that it goes into the toilet. So that is the end of our trip though the digestion system.
