Fire
Fighting is the knowledge and technique used to extinguish a fire
We realized to protect yourself, it’s important to understand the basic characteristics of fire. Fire spreads quickly; there is no time to gather valuables or make a phone call. In just two minutes a fire can become life threatening. In five minutes a residence can be engulfed in flames. One needs to know the basic fire fighting techniques & design exit routes. After an intensive study the students designed a pamphlet for safety at home & distributed the same to all parents during the PTM on 10 July ,2005.The brochure consisted of samples of escape routes ,basic fire fighting techniques & important telephone numbers. The parents further pledged to communicate it to their neighborhood. Yes , the message definitely seeped in the community. Today in Gurgaon ,Fire break outs are rarely heard about.
The first
step in escaping a fire in the home is to plan things beforehand. By installing
smoke detectors in the home and ensuring that they operate in an orderly manner,
family members can be made alert to the presence of smoke or fire. It takes fire
10 to 15 minutes to burn through a wooden door. Keeping the same in mind, it is
advisable to keep the doors of the bedrooms closed . The next step which is
necessary for family members is to visit each bedroom and figure out two escape
routes -
1.
The normal exit
Each family member has to familiarized with the safe methods of getting outside by at least two routes. The identification and repair of jammed windows is as important. If, during a fire, a window is jammed, it could be broken out with an object and a blanket or towel placed over the frame to cover shards of glass.
Realize the Danger of
Smoke
Heat and smoke from fire can be more dangerous than the flames. Inhaling the super-hot air can sear your lungs. Fire produces poisonous gases that make you disoriented and drowsy. Instead of being awakened by a fire, you may fall into a deeper sleep. Asphyxiation is the leading cause of fire deaths, exceeding burns, by a three-to-one ratio.
Smoke and heat rise so the best place to find fresher, cooler air is near the floor. When one is caught in a building full of smoke, one should drop on hands and knees and crawl to the nearest exit. Testing all closed doors before opening them , feeling the back of the door and not opening it if it is hot, is advisable. Turn and go to the second route of exit. If the door is not hot, open slowly but if there are flames one should be prepared to slam it closed again.
A special
meeting place like a mailbox , the neighbor's driveway or a large tree in the
yard should be established at a safe distance from the house .It has to be
something stationary .This is where everyone meets in the case of a fire. It
also prevents family members from wandering around the neighborhood looking for
one another, or in the worse case, being tempted to re-enter the house in
flames.
Our school conducted workshops to teach the principles of fire fighting. They were taught to use a fire extinguisher and basic safety rules. Workshops & Seminars were held for different age groups. Click below for further details
