Fire Safety Campaign

50 PLUS                YOUTH              CHILDREN

A  Fire out break tragedy in Tamil Nadu occurred mainly due to the unsafe structure of the school, that did not have any emergency escape routes for the children to be evacuated. All of us were  shocked and saddened by the death of more than 90 school children in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu. Such images of abject grief, of victims, of largely avoidable man-made disasters, occur repeatedly in India and are soon forgotten till the next incident jolts public memory again.

We discussed that most schools in our community are built with minimum concern for safety . There are different factors on which the dangers which may threaten children and staff if a fire breaks out, like the building in which they are housed, whether the building has enough doors and windows for rescue operations, if it is a multistoried building- the number, width and accessibility to the staircases, etc.

The chief objective of our campaign “FIRE” was concentrated on making the schools aware of the need to construct safe structures. Our fire routine were based on a simple, efficient course of action which is specifically designed for the premises in which it has to operate. Consideration was given to the age of the pupils attending the school and as to whether there are any children with special needs.

Some of the results of pre-planning for the management of a fire breakout can be-

  1. Provision of fire extinguishers in appropriate locations.
  2. Provision of profuse water in tanks etc.
  3. Access to emergency phone numbers
  4. Short escape routes to exit in minimum amount of time.
