An Unstoppable Force Some countries, due to sheer population size and industry, seem to have a lot of influence over global warming. Unfortunately this influence is quite negative. China and India, who emit far less greenhouse gas than many major countries, aspire in some ways to be like America. Flashy gas-guzzling cars, portrayed in many major films, appear to be vocal in the quintessential American lifestyle. The figures show that the impact of China and India will be huge in the future. For example, the greenhouse gas emissions could rise 70% by the year 2025 in India, and the emission increase of China from the year 2000 to year 2030 will nearly equal the increase from the total industrialized world. So, the two countries' sincere participation is crucial for the long-run success of the Kyoto Protocol. The Exclusion of United States and Australia is another reason why many people think that the Kyoto Protocol will not work. The world worries that the biggest emitter of carbon dioxide not participating will mean that the other countries will fact higher pressures. Did you know that USA has 5% of the world's population, but they produce 20% of the carbon dioxide emissions? However, the treaty is still ratified by 163 countries, an impressive figure. |
