  • 1972 - First Earth Summit; Stockholm, Sweden
    • Leaders around the world decided to meet every 10 years to discuss the state of the world's environment.

  • 1982 - Failed Earth Summit; Nairobi, Kenya
    • Being held during the period of the Cold War, it failed and is not considered an official summit.

  • 1988 - The International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) created
    • The International body realized the seriousness and thus set up the IPCC. Scientists around the world gathered to research.

  • 1988 - Toronto Conference on the Changing Atmosphere
    • The first major climate change conference. A target was proposed.

  • 1990 - IPCC releases first report
    • The IPCC reported that the planet was warming and that it was human activities causing it.

  • 1992 - Second Earth Summit; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
    • Largest gathering of world leaders. There they made the Rio Convention which called all parties to reduce the GHG emissions to the 1990 emissions.

  • 1995 Conference of Parties; Berlin, Germany
    • Held each year to review the Rio Convention.

  • 1995 - Second Report release by IPCC.
    • A more certain report confirming that human activities caused the changing climates.

    • 1996 - Second Conference of Parties; Geneva, Switzerland
      • The countries part of Rio Convention admitted that climate change is threatening.

    • 1997 - Third Conference of Parties; Kyoto, Japan
      • The Kyoto Protocol was made and signed.

    • 1998 - Fourth Conference of the Parties; Bueno Aires, Argentina
      • Discussed the implementation so the Kyoto Protocol but decided that it should be finalized later on.

    • 2000 - Sixth Conference of Parties: The Hague, Netherlands
      • Failed, with disagreement on "carbon sinks".

    • 2001 - Seventh Conference of Parties; Bonn, Germany
      • The world finally agreed on the Protocol. 180 countries agreed with the Kyoto Protocol.

    • 2004, Nov - Russia Ratifies the Kyoto Protocol
      • Russia's crucial ratification fulfills the requirements for the Protocol to take effect. The countries collectively are responsible for 55% of the GHG emissions

    • 2005, Feb 16 - Kyoto Protocol goes into effect
      • Three months after required number of countries, the Kyoto protocol took effect.
