Shovetide football is a real sport.  There are only three rules in Shovetide football you can’t transport the ball by vehicle, no manslaughter, and no murder.  Anything else is completely legal.  You could hit somebody in the shin with a golf club and it would be legal!  Play after midnight is also against the rules.

Royal Shovetide Football is the full name of the sport.  The royal part came when the Prince of Wales played in 1928.

The sport takes place in Ashbourne Derbyshire, England.  There are two posts.  One at Surton Mill and one at Clifton Mill; they are three miles apart.  The teams are made up of were you live in the city.  Those who live north of Henmore Brook are the Uppers. Those who live south of Henmore Brook are the Downwards, but any one in the city can join the fun.

The Centre of Ashbourne is protected with boards.  The game usually starts around two PM.  The ball is then turned up in Shaw croft by a local dignitary.  The ball is made of leather and cork.

Shovetide Football is a very dangerous sport.
