Murderball is a sport for quadriplegic athletes. It originated in Canada but moved down the US in 1981. It was formerly called Quad Ruby, but players agreed that Murderball better fit the sport. Murderball players use special wheelchairs, there is no murder involved with the people, however the chairs certainly get a beating. Some players will get custom made chairs from scratch, fit for their disability and height. Some will buy ready-made chairs from Murderball wheelchair manufacturers. The object of the game is to carry a ball, some what like a volleyball, across the other teams line; 1 point is scored when done. The player holding the ball must pass or dribble within 10 seconds of receiving it. The team also has t pass it to the other teams half court within 15 seconds. Four people from each team go on the court at a time. The court for Murderball is a wooden floor the size of a basketball court. Physical contact is not legal, but blocking, knocking and rolling with the chairs is. It made an Olympic debut at the Paralympics after the Summer Games in Atlanta in 1996, then was changed to a full medal sport at the 2000 Olympics in Syndey. |
