Motocross is a form of motorcycle racing that is held on enclosed off-road circuits. It is considered the most popular form of motorcycling. The sport was originally called Scrambling when the sport was invented in the UK. Combining the words “Motorcycle” and “Cross country” made up the term “motocross”. It is abbreviated MX. The bikes used for motocross are usually lightweight and are powered by highly tuned two-stroke or four-stroke engines. They have knobby tires for traction on loose surfaces, highly shock-absorbent suspension systems to soak up any bumps in their path, and small gearing for quick acceleration rather than top speeds. Trigger Gumm set the world record for longest jump on a motocross bike on May 17, 2005 at Ipswich’s Queensland Raceway in Australia. Gumm took a Honda CR500 off of a jump going 85 miles per hour. He flew 85 feet high and went 277.5 feet far in front of officials from the Guinness Book Of World Records and 25,000 fans |
