Freediving is an extremely dangerous sport. Divers dive down to maximum depths. And did I mention they have no air tank? Yeah, they have to dive to 100 to 400ft below the surface. Up until recently freedivers have been daring the deep without instructions. The International of Nitrox and Technical Divers (IANTD) have introduced instructional courses for various freediving activities. These courses last only one to three days. The courses will teach vital breath holding abilities and comfort under intense pressure. The courses also help with safety exercising breath holding procedure and emergency procedures such as running out of breath. All divers fear a shallow water blackout. A shallow water blackout is caused by pressure of your own oxygen during the ascent. Because of this the diver becomes unconscious, that’s not good at three-hundred feet below the surface. For other safety reasons the divers never train alone. They have a buddy with them otherwise known as a spotter. Some divers even take yoga classes to learn to slow their breathing and heart rates. Audrey Ferreras on May 13th 2000 broke the women no limit record. She dove to a depth of 412.5 feet! She achieved this depth of the coast of the Canary Islands, Spain. The dive must be unassisted. Nobody may enter the water during the dive unless the diver is in any danger.
