The group is made up of one Malaysian, two Chinese and three Singaporeans. Yang and Ren are from China. There is more or less some Confucian influence on them. Timothy, Yong Wen and Yen Yeen provide a more westernized view. In this way, our readers, be it from Asia, Europe or even America, will feel welcomed.
Moreover, besides the six of us, there were many people from different countries who helped us out during this project. There are a lot of foreigners studying in Victoria Junior College, Singapore. We asked these students from different Asian countries like China, India, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Philippines and Vietnam to read our articles. At the same time, they also gave comment on our site. With their valuable comments, our site is quite likely to reach an international standard. Moreover, it will definitely be interesting to hear their exotic voices.
Ren
This is ren from team Gamathica. As the team leader, I basically did the administrative work like devising schedule, arrange online meeting and cater to the needs of the team(for instance, borrowing microphone for audio record). Since our main purpose is to arouse the viewers' interest in math, our articles are avoided to be long-winded and the content has to be written in a vivid language. It is quite laborious and difficult for me to do it since my English is not so good. However, I think that I benefited from the whole process and my English has improved more or less. Since the team consists of members from different countries and even different schools, sometimes I have to be very considerate about those issues related to country and school. We only met each other at the very beginning of the competition. After that we communicated with each other over e-mail, MSN messenger and an online-based chat called Campfire. Our online collaboration was very efficient and it also helped us to overcome some physical constraints.
Throughout the competition, I think that we really collaborated well and worked as team regardless of countries and schools. Most of all, I learned and enjoyed the comradeship of the fellow teammates.
Yong Wen
I am Yong Wen. I am mainly in charge of scripting and coding the site. I work closely with Timothy who is in charge of Flash animation. As I have to ensure that the site appears well in as many browsers as possible, I have to test and come up with workarounds with situations when a certain feature does not work as intended in browsers. As such, this can take up a considerable amount of time. However, I have managed to complete the site with the help of my team mates and we work well together.
Throughout the course of this project, I have learnt a lot more about web standards and I have managed to code a first site (this site) without using tables for layout purposes. I have also managed to learn some more about Javascript as I have to work around with limited interactivity when server side scripting is not available.
Timothy
I am Timothy from team Gamathica. In the team, I specialize mainly in Flash designing. I work closely Yong Wen, who designs the main website, and I supply him with any Flash animation or applet that he needs. Since general Flash designing tends to be associated with notoriously long production periods, there is the possibility of me not being able to produce said movie in as short a time frame as would be desired by the whole group, I put my focus on doing the job well. Thus, I believe in focusing on quality of my work rather than simply getting the job done in a rushed way. Overall, I try my best to work well with my group members even though my current schedule is, unfortunately, quite busy. By working with the two Chinese students in our team, there is a significant improvement in my spoken Chinese.
Chang Sheng
I am Chang Sheng. I love playing sports especially basketball and table tennis and I listen to pop/rock music.
I am in charge of the site's content and profile. I researched and gathered information on the five famous mathematicians ,six applications of math and the history of math in five countries. I also came up with the questions for the interactive quiz. In a way, I am like the Customs man. Every single text you see on this site had to be screened and approved by me. I also edited the unapproved ones till I deemed fit.
I suppose that the reason that I am given this job is because I have a pretty good command of English. Most importantly, I like my job.
Yang
I am Yang from Gamathica. I love playing soccer and table tennis and I like listening rock music and my favorite subjects in school are physics math and computing.
I collected some information on the applications of math. I set the questions for the matching quiz. I also came up with some suggestion along the way. Even though the schedule for us is quite tight and each of us has his own activities to do, the team cooperated well. And I learnt to be considerate to others and also important to be active in the team.
All in all, I believe these experience are really valuable for me and will help in my further career life.
YenYeen
This is YenYeen from Hwa Chong Institution. I am currently taking triple sciences with Mathematics and Economics for my A Levels. I chose to take all three sciences with Mathematics because I have strong interest in the sciences. I particularly love Mathematics as it is the basis of all wonders. That was why I am in this team and I hope to achieve greater heights in Maths by doing a little more than what the school provides.
As I am better equipped with IT skills which I gained in my secondary school, I am now the graphic designer of this team. My job is to design the wallpapers which can help to make the website more interactive and appeal to the users in a different way, allowing them to learn some interesting facts of the fantastic world of Maths. Although I just joined the team not long ago, I am enjoying my job and my interactions with my fellow team members, especially the team leader. As I am the only one from a different school, interactions with the others are really limited. However, I am glad that teamwork is still able to be fostered, evident in the wonderful job we all came together to put up.
Mr. Chia Keng Hian
As a coach for Thinkquest, I will see what is going on, give them
feedback and motivation and help if asked to. I see how the group
develops and support them in their development in order to find their
own way, goals and dynamics to complete their task.
Mr. Gi Soong Chee
I am very proud of this ThinkQuest team. Despite the impossibly tight
time frame, the members managed to come up with a reasonably well
designed site with quality content and innovative features. This must
be attributed to the excellent leadership and effective communication
of all students involved. The group wasted no time in getting down to
tasks in spite of the very late entry into the competition. Everyone
contributed significantly and worked amiably to achieve the project
outcomes. It was impressive how the team stayed focussed and
productive and still managed to have quite some fun along the way. :)
It was truly an enjoyable experience seeing how well the team
collaborated. I wish them all the very best in their future ThinkQuest
journeys and in life. Nil Sine Labore. :)
Collaboration
We enjoy the whole process of building this site from the very beginning till the end. It has been a great experience for each of us and we have gained a lot of knowledge about website designing through the whole process. Living in different part of the country, there is hardly any opportunity for five of us to sit down and work together in the physical world, however, with the help of a web-based group chat called Campfire, we managed to work together in the virtual world. The learning journey to build this site is very sweet. By working together, we are also helping or in some sense, teaching each other since we each have different strengths. By collaborating closely, we learn together and get to know each other better. By exchanging our cultural values with one another, we become more culturally considerate and sensitive.
