 Although Irkutsk is rather old (about 345 years), the percentage of young people among the citizens of the city is very high!
According to the statistic, Irkutsk holds the first place among Siberian cities for the quantity of students. Therefore in our city there is a big variety of different universities. Some of them are well known even out of Irkutsk region. The first university to be founded in the city was the Irkutsk State University. It was opened in 1917. There are many faculties, that are ranging from geographical and biological to advertising. They attract students from all the Siberia. This university is famous for its great library, located in the former house of the Irkutsk governor.
One of the departments of the Irkutsk State University became the independent institute before WWII and now it is the Irkutsk State Linguistic University. It is the only linguistic university in the Siberia from the Urals to the Far East.
One of the biggest universities situated in the city is the Irkutsk State Technical University.
The total length of the university’s corridors is about 11 km! Mathematical and physical subjects constitute the basis of education there.
The opportunity to study economics and laws is provided by the Baikal State University of Economics and Law. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious high schools. All the buildings of the university are united in one modern complex.
People interested in railroad, the way to operate it and drive a train, usually choose entering the Irkutsk State Railway University. From the first sight this university impresses everyone with its size: nine floors of classes, laboratories and assembly halls! After graduating, students become specialists in different fields dealing with railroad, such as conductors of cars, switchmen, trackwalkers, engineer’s assistants and many others.
To sum up, Irkutsk can be called the city of students. It gives great opportunity for people with different tastes and skills, so to entry one of the universities means to fulfill one’s dreams!
