The Church of Saint Prokopiy and Saint Ioanne
The Wonder-workers of Ustyug

(1740-1767)

The original wooden church was built in 1703 by the natives of Ustyug the Great, who had brought with them to Irkutsk the icon of Prokopiy and Ioann, who were miracle-workers. The building of the stone church began in 1740, and the money was donated by the young merchant Glazunoff, who also came from Ustyug. In 1748 the wooden church burned down, and in 1767 it was reconsecrated. It was the church that began the style of the so-called "Siberian baroque." The features of this church were later repeated while building new ones. The church was damaged during the fire of 1879, and it was reconstructed thanks to Shergin, a clergyman who gathered the money and changed the plans of the church, adding some new features.
The church was closed in the 1930s, and later the building was demolished. Now a three-storied house is at that location.
