Saint Gregory, Neokessaria's Bishop Church

Saint Gregory, Neokessaria's Bishop Church

(1802-1805)

This stone church was built in 1802 within the wall of the Trinity Church. It was built on townspeople's money, and the architect was Losev. During the entire nineteenth century the church was constantly being damaged by floods. Between 1836 and 1845 even services were halted. In 1879 the church was destroyed by fire. The damages were so great that it was decided not to reconstruct it, and instead an alms-house for orphans and widows was established there. Since 1931 it was a hostel for the medical profession, and since 1985, a club of cinema amateurs. In 1985 it was registered as a valuable architectural monument and a church.
