The Bogoyavlensky Cathedral
(of the Apparition)

The first wooden cathedral was built here from 1693 to 1695, but fire destroyed it. At the same location a new cathedral was built in 1718. The money was given by townspeople. The construction of the cathedral lasted for about twenty years. In 1742 the hipped roof was destroyed, and replaced by a wooden dome with a broach spire. In 1925 the Bogoyavlensky Cathedral was put on the list of the most valuable monuments. Nevertheless, the cathedral was closed and a bakery was installed. In 1960 the cathedral was put on the list of All-Russian monuments. Between 1967 and1985 it was restored by the architect Oranskaya. In 1994 it was given back to the eparchy of Irkutsk and consecrated in 1995. Now it is being reconstructed.
The architecture is a quaint combination of Old Russian cathedral style with some baroque elements. It is unique for its multicultural tiles, presenting flowers and mythological animals.
