Silicone derivatives are a quietly pervasive family of chemicals used in cosmetics. Its name relegates a sort of space-age zeitgeist, an aura of cool technology—however, remember that high-tech doesn’t mean healthy. This is just another group of chemicals whose long-term effects contradict their supposed function in cosmetics.

Consider this: counted amongst the negative effects of silicone derivatives are dry skin, premature wrinkles, skin irritation, and a possible link to tumor formation. Furthermore, in lab animals, males dosed with dimethicone showed degeneration of reproductive organs and lower body weight. Funny thing is, I found that silicone derivatives are often used in anti-aging substances, anti-rash cream, and moisturizers. Unless the definitions of “anti-aging,” “anti-rash,” and “moisturize” have radically changed since I last checked, this is what I would call Irony.

Besides the cosmetics already mentioned, silicone derivatives are also found in face wash, conditioner, foundation, sunscreen, eye cream, shampoo, styling gel, eyeshadow, face powder, concealer, blush, deodorant, lip balm, highlighter, mascara, nail polish, acne treatment, lipstick, hair color, aftershave, baby lotion, hairspray, eyeliner, shaving cream, dandruff treatment, lip gloss, liquid hand soap, baby wipes, hair loss treatment, makeup remover, body glitter, lip liner, toothpaste, and most waterproof makeup. An impressive list indeed, with their silicone derivatives masquerading as ingredients that prevent loss of moisture.

In fact, silicone derivatives do form watertight barriers, but thus cause the skin’s trapped perspiration to act as its own irritant. To exacerbate it further, these waterproof cosmetics must be removed using special solvents which strip away your skin’s sebum, an oily protective substance which guards against irritants, pollutants, and other chemicals!

Sadly, cosmetics companies are either too lazy or ignorant of the fact that vegetable glycerin is a viable substitute. Unlike silicone derivatives, it is safe and biodegradable. Instead of using vegetable glycerin, however, most companies simply elect to utilize silicone derivatives.

As with many classes of commonly used cosmetic chemicals, the best way to protect yourself from negative side effects is simply to be aware of the ingredients label. Watch for silicone derivatives, appearing as dimethicone, dimethicone copolyl, cyclomethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, tremethylsiloxysilicate, and cetearyl methicone. If a certain lotion seems to instantaneously make your skin smoother, check its Ingredients label for silicon.
