ancient Piracy

Ever since there have been man there as been piracy. It was a major problem when traders started sailing across seas because pirate ships would wait on the coast for a merchant ship to come along and since they weren’t very well armed they were easy targets for heavily armed pirate ships.

Most pirates started out as merchant sailors who where attacked by pirates and were adopted to become part of the crew. The captains of pirate ships would usually steel a ship from a harbor with the help of his crew. War ships made excellent pirate ships since they are heavily armed and have thicker hulls to withstand damage better.

Caesar was captured by pirates in 75BC near an island call Pharmcusa after escaping from Sulla’s soldiers. Although he was captured he wasn’t really a prisoner because the pirates came to like him and set a ransom of 20 talents which he thought an insult and convinced them to double the ransom by saying that he was worth more than that. He was so friendly with the pirates he would joke about coming back after he was freed and kill each and every last of the pirates. They were so friendly to Caesar that when was trying to sleep he would command that they be quit and they would.

After Caesar was released he took his navy and hunted down the pirates and finally found them lying on a beach he crucified them. Rumor has it that before he crucified them he slit there throats as a sign of compassion.
