WIZARDS AND GOBLINS IN EAST LOTHIAN
|
|
|
INTRODUCTION
|
East Lothian has never really been known for ghost sightings or witches, but if you delve deeper into the depths of folklore, you will find many things you never thought you would.
In this page you will find many things about Sir Hugo and his haunted home as well as some stories about other wizards who roamed the county of East Lothian. You may find there are many things you may not want to read after dark (If it is after dark now, while you are reading, you don't necessarily have to read something else, but it might be a good idea to do so if you are someone who frightens easily.).
We hope you enjoy this site as much as we do. So don't sit back and relax too much in case some spooks catch you off guard, but do enjoy this page.

WHAT IS A WIZARD?
|
In case you don't know a wizard is a man dressed in long robes and a pointed hat (only joking). There are many different definitions of the word wizard. Here are some of them:
1. A wizard is an ordinary man, born into any type of family. He is then chosen by the devil to do his bidding forever more. Some are given tests such as killing the king. While he is not doing the devil's bidding he is said to practice his magic in special, magically built chambers. Then, as he is immortal the wizard roams the earth forever more!
2. A wizard is a hermit. He is a solitary man who does not enjoy living with other people. He is thought to be doing evil deeds in his isolated home, so is either locked up or said to be a warlock and burned. These men are usually not actually wizards but just solitary people.
3. A wizard is a type of priest, a type of hermit who does the sort of religious part of the clan. He may be an expert with herbs and be the clan's doctor. He might live slightly away from the clan so he can communicate with the gods. But he may also have to be the person who takes takes charge of human sacrifice if the gods are displeased, be the person who does all the work to make sure the clan stays safe from the gods' wrath. To make him a wizard though, he would have to have something to do with magic. This part of the job would be when he communicates with the gods and carries through the rituals of sacrifice and suchlike, pressumably having to open up magical barriers between himself and the gods.
4. "Wizard" means cool, wicked, brilliant etc. . (You didn't really need to know this as it is not really relevant, but we thought you might like to know, if you didn't already.)
If you ever see a man walking a long who fits into any of these discriptions he may just be dressing up so don't run away in fear.

WHAT IS A GOBLIN?
|
Goblins are supposedly small dirty creatures that dig tunnels and are servants to the wizards. The builders of Yester Castle were said to be goblins by the locals because of their dark skin. The dark skin was thought to have been dyed by the work they did underground. They were actually black skinned people pressumably from Africa. Real goblins however are said to have helped to build the Goblin Ha' where Sir Hugo practised his magic.
Goblins are not very powerful creatures, so they usually play the part of forced labourers in stories. They are good workers because of their experience underground, although some would not ever have worked underground if they had been born into slavery. They would, of course, inherit their parents good working skills anyway.
Goblins have never been hunted the way witches and warlocks have because they were never as well known. They have never caused much trouble so they have been left out of many history books. They are however mentioned in many fairy tales and stories and therefore has much right to be known about as any other mystical creature.
