Coral Snake

The Coral Snake is # 8 on our most deadly list.   They only attack if they feel they are in danger.  They hide under logs, in the sand or sometimes in plants.  This makes it easy for them to live near people without being seen!  You can find them in North America, South America and Central America.  They do not live in any other part of the world.

There are 50 different species of coral snakes.  All of them have very slender bodies.  The coral snake has big red bands and small yellow and black bands.  You can easily tell if it is a coral snake because the red and yellow bands are right beside each other, like a traffic light.  It looks really cool with those colors.  This snake (as with all snakes) has no ears.  They feel vibrations in the ground by using special bones in their skulls.  They also don't have eyelids (no snakes do) but have clear scales that cover each eye.

The maximum length of this snake is no longer than 3 feet .  It eats mainly other snakes and reptiles.  It uses its sense of smell more than anything else to find its prey.
