Saw Scaled Viper

The Saw Scaled Viper is # 7 on our most deadly list.  It is a small, poisonous snake belonging to the viper family.  It is common in dry plains, rocky slopes and deserts from West Africa to India and Sri Lanka.  It has an aggressive temper and even though it is only 15 to 30 inches in length, it’s bite may cause many human deaths due to its toxic venom.

It spends most of its time under sand with only its eyes showing.  When threatened, it rubs special scales together to make a loud rasping sound.  That is how it gets its name!  It sounds kind of like sawing wood.
