                                  paul Gustav Heinrich Bachmann

 

        Bachmann was born on June 22, 1837 in Berlin Germany.  His father was a Lutheran minister and he lived in a very strict home.  Bachmann was a good musician.  He wasn’t very good at mathematics during his childhood.  His teacher, Karl Schetlback helped him greatly.  He inspired Paul to study mathematics in college.

            He decided to study mathematics at the University of Berlin.  He then went to Breslau and studied the number theory.  Bachmann soon became a professor at Breslau.  He studied number theory for many years, including doing a complete survey giving results and evaluating the methods of proof. 

            Bachmann wrote a few books.  One of his more popular books was, Das Eermat-Problem In Seiner Bisherigan Entwicklung, published in 1919.  He died on March 31, 1920 in Weimar, Germany.
