Chihuahua is known as "The Big State" as it occupies a large portion of northern Mexico. European countries such as Austria, Poland, and Czechoslovakia occupied parts of this territory as well as Nuevo Leon and influenced the food, traditions, dress, and music. The dances of heel and toe also known as shotis, polka, double step, and huapangos. The dances stem from original dances and steps of the European countries. The costumes worn for these dances are similar to the clothing worn by people of the Old West and the Cowboys with modifications for climate of the region.
