Shani Davis currently holds the world record in the 1000m, and captured gold in that event on day 8 of the Olympics. Davis made history in Torino, becoming the first African-American to make the U.S. Olympic Speed Skating Team, and also becoming the first African American to win an individual gold in Winter Olympic history. Davis tends to only race in major competitions in the off season, not bothering with the World Cup circuit. He also enjoys and is an acceptional runner. His mother used to wake him up early to run a mile before school.
