The Myth of Creation

At first there was only Nun. Nun was the dark water of Chaos. One day a hill rose up out of the waters.  This hill was called Ben-Ben. On the hill stood Atum, the first God.  Atum coughed and spat out Shu, god of air, and Tefnut, the Goddess of moisture.

Shu and Tefnut had two children. The first was Geb, God of the Earth and Nut, Goddess of the sky. Shu lifted Nut up so that she became a canopy over Geb.

Nut and Geb had four children: Osiris, Isis, Seth and Nephthys.  Osiris was the king of the Earth, and Isis was his queen. Osiris was a good king and he ruled over Earth for many years. However all was not well.  Seth was jealous of Osiris because he wanted to be ruler over the Earth. His anger grew until one day he killed Osiris by locking him in a box and throwing the box into the Nile.  Isis found his body and healed it with her magic powers.  Seth became even angrier and chopped Osiris up into fourteen pieces and threw him into the Nile. Isis once again restored his body and Osiris went down into the underworld. Seth remained on Earth and became king.

Osiris and Isis had a son, Horus.  Horus and Isis battled Seth and regained the throne. After that, Horus was the king of the Earth and Osiris was king of the Underworld.
