Lesson Plan and Worksheet Activity: Country to Country
Objective: To learn about the Avian Flu by skimming and scanning for information
Materials: Laptops, if unavailable computers and/or a computer with a projector, printed worksheets, pencils, paper
Time: 20 minutes for the worksheet, another 20 for discussion
Procedure:
Tell the students they will be looking for the breakdown of Avian Flu facts by country. Tell the students this page of the website is a quick guide to some of the Avian Flu situations in different parts of the world. Have the students look at the table of facts. Ask them to skim the information. Separate the students into groups. Tell the students they will be responsible for locating information on the worksheet. This is called scanning for information. Explain skimming and scanning is very useful in reading all kinds of text books and helps you remember quick facts. Have the students begin the activity. The first team who completes the activity wins! Have the winning group read the answers. This helps generate a deeper discussion on the Avian Flu, especially the last two questions.
*Or separate the students into four groups give, separate the questions into four groups. This means each group has six questions. Have groups answer the questions. Present the answers to class. That way each group fill in the blanks they did not answer and everyone can participate. Leave the last two questions for a whole class discussion.
*Another way a teacher can do this is by whole group activity. Simply ask the students the questions on the worksheet and have them raise their hands when they find the answer
