There are a lot of American myths. But I will tell you about mermaids. Sailors would day dream and they saw beautiful creatures. These  creatures were half women half fish. But these sailors as I said were Daydreaming . So they saw manatees as a beautiful mermaid. a mermaid is a legendary aquatic creature with the head and torso of human female and the tail of a fish. The male version of a mermaid is called a merman. Various cultures throughout the world have similar figures.
