There are over 3000 different species of mosquitoes and they all go through 4 stages of development. These being egg(1), larva(2), pupa(3), and adult mosquito(4). In warmer climates
they live shorter lives but lay more eggs. Adult females usually lay between 40 and 400 eggs at one time. It usually takes about 10 days for the eggs to hatch. ![]() When the eggs hatch
the larvae (sometimes called wrigglers because they are so active) come out. Larvae eat very small aquatic animals. They are able to breath through a tube in their abdomen which they keep above the water. The larvae molt 4 times. ![]() After the fourth molt
they are called a pupa (also called a tumbler). The pupae do not eat. They stay in this stage for 2 days. ![]() Then they emerge as
the adult mosquito. The adult mosquito is usually no bigger than 15mm and weights about 2- 2.5mg. It usually takes about 2 weeks for the egg to become an adult mosquito. The adult life span for males is 2 to 3 weeks and females can survive up to 3 to 4 months.
