A test called PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) looks for the actual DNA and RNA from the virus. The inflammatory cellsproduced by the inflammation release a substance called protease which causes damage to the brain cells (neurons) and glial cells which provide support and protection to the neurons.
These changes can be observed in spinal fluid taken when a spinal tap (lumbar puncture) is performed. The glucose (sugar) in the spinal fluid is decreased and sometimes antigens for the particular virus can be found.

Encephalitis

What is Encephalitis?
The part of the brain usually affected is the cerebral cortex which is the outer layer of the brain (not the covering or meninges).

Often this is caused by a virus and once the brain is under sige there are many changes in the way the brain functions.

Treatment consists of supportive care usually in the hospital. If seizures occur then anti seizure medication is given. Occasionally antiviral medications are prescribed but it is not known if this helps. Steroids are given to reduce the brain swelling in some cases.

Well it's inflammation of the brain tissue (parenchyma).
