About Us

Tiffany

Mr. Das

Hi! My name is Tiffany and I am 10 and in 5th grade. I have 2 brothers.
My role in this website is graphics, animation, web design, and editing.

I like reading, dancing (ballet), singing, playing piano, playing flute,
tennis, drawing things on flash, and playing computer games (Total
Annihalation and Sims 2). My favorite food is fruit. My favorite author
is Laura Ingalls Wilder but strangely my favorite bookis Little Women
(the long version). My favorite subjects are Science and Math.

In the summer I was thinking about what topic to do. We had a lot
of topics before we came up with this one. They were Mixed Connective
Tissue Disease, West Nile Virus, and Encephalitis. When it was summer
I was always bitten by mosquitoes. I’m allergic to mosquito bites. So
you say everyone’s allergic to mosquito bites. I’m more, if I get 2
mosquito bites my whole arm swells up and stings. When I was in the
Philippines to be a flower girl in a wedding I was a swollen flower girl.
I had 20 mosquito bites every day! My aunt in Thailand also died of
a mosquito borne disease. So I decided to do mosquitoes.

Some of the drawings I drew and Tejas and Sunny colored them and
some of them I drew by myself and the rest of them Victoria and
Thomas drew. On the writing Thomas, Victoria, and Arun did a really
good job. Everyone did what they did best and everything turned out
awsome.

A lot of the things that I had to do on this website were things I
didn’t know how to do so I learned at least 1 new thing every day in
the summer. Animations took a long time and sometimes it frustrated
me a lot. The pictures were hard too. You can never get it exactly as
you want it. First I drew the rough picture then I kept editing and
editing and editing. Still, I couldn’t get it exactly right.

When I was researching I learned that millions of children and
animals die from these diseases. These diseases are especially
prominent in Africa. I hope people who visit this site will
become aware of these diseases and try to help those people in
need. I enjoyed making this site and I hope you’ll enjoy visiting it.
Of course there were some sad parts about it but I’m glad there
are so many organizations trying to help and raise awareness.

I would also like to thank Ngoc Tran for giving me inspiration,
advice, and for giving me the picture of the Vietnamese dengue
poster.

While I was reading about artemsisia I was thinking whether it
could be genetically modified to be able to grow easily and
plentifully all over Africa.

Victoria

My name is Victoria. I am 11 years old and in sixth grade. My hobbies
include swimming, biking and skiing. In my free time I like to write on
my computer too. I have a lot of cats. Altogether I have four cats.
One is a tuxedo cat and the rest are tabbies. We adopted them from
the local animal shelter.

To increase my knowledge of how the mosquito evolves we decided
to try to raise mosquitoes from eggs. Unfortunately, my first few tries
of putting a mosquito larvae under a microscope came out in failure for
I squashed them more than once!

In my backyard I have a swamp so I have always been interested in
how mosquito-born diseases affect people. This contest let me have
the opportunity to explore this interesting topic! Through this
experience I have learned a lot and I know this information will come in
handy in my future.

Thomas

Hello, my name is Thomas and I live in New Hampshire. I am 10 years
old and I live with my parents, 2 sisters, 1 brother and 4 cats. My father
was is from Brooklyn New York and my mother is from Portsmouth
England.

I enjoy baseball, swimming and playing on the trampoline.
I really love checking out weird and wacky websites on my computer.

I am testing for black belt in karate in June 2006. My family loves animals
and we often foster kittens and mother cats with babies during kitten
season for the animal shelter. At times we have had 10 cats in the
house!

We decided to design this website because we were really
interested in nature and as we have a pond at the back of our house
we were always getting bitten by mosquitoes in the summer. We
wondered who these annoying insects were and why some people
were bitten more than others. In this project I drew some of the
pictures and wrote some of the text.

My favorite book is something between Enders Game and Hitchhikers
Guide ToThe Galaxy. My favorite food is tofu. I love sleeping after I
work hard on my projects. I like sudoko and puzzles and I like American
Idol.

Arun

I attend Elementary Five at the Chatsworth International School
in Singapore. Likes to play outdoors (soccer and cricket) and
board games indoors (Monopoly, Numero, and Mancala). Favorite
computer game is Battle for Wesnoth.

Sunny

Hi, I'm Sunny, I'm in 4th grade and I live in the United States of
America.

Since the beginning Tiffany has been giving a little bit of work and I
loved it. Tiffany and I met a few times and got to know each other.
Tiffany gave me a couple of things to work on each time. I
interviewed my uncle in India and learned a lot about the symptoms
of Malaria.

Besides Thinkquest I've been doing a lot of other interesting things.
Some of the things are: karate (I won a trophy), Destination
Imagination (DI) (I won 4th place 3 points behind the 3rd place
team), Sunday school ( I learn about my culture and I speak Indian)
Lego League (I won 6th place) soccer, and snowboarding. The
hardest part was at the beginning when I had to paraphrase from a
website. The fun part was to write all the jokes on the website.

Tejas

Hi. I am Tejas. I'm in 6th grade and live in the United States of
America. I was the last team member to join this team.

A few days after I joined the team I was assigned to color the
pictures on our website. I used software programs called
Photoshop and Gimp2. On both programs the most helpful tools
for my job
were : the magic wand and the fill-in bucket. I also
worked with my teammate Tiffany. She out-lined the pictures
that I had to color. My time to complete this task was difficult,
along with theother activities besides Thinkquest.

Some of the activities were Destination Imagination(DI)-2nd
place winner, karate-1st degree black belt, First Lego League
-6th place winner, soccer, snowboarding and choreographing
a dance.

What I thought was the hardest part about joining Thinkquest
was budgeting my time and sometimes I had to work late night
to complete coloring pictures that were needed immediately.

Coach

Mr. Das

teaches information systems at Nanyang Technological University in
Singapore. Likes to play with Arun, listen to music, and look after pets.

Assistant Coach

Mr. Adinugroho (Mr. Sigit)

Hello! I'm Sigit Adinugroho, 20 and I serve as the Assistant Coach for
this team. I am from Bandung, Indonesia; a city 150km southeast
from the capital, Jakarta. I study Visual Communication Design in
Institut Teknologi Bandung, currently in my third year.

It's been wonderful to work with a team of enthusiastic kids from
the other part of the world and to find out how independent and
capable they are. It's my first time coaching since I had always been
a student in ThinkQuest, and also my first time enrolling in the 12
and Under category. It has its own challenges, I never thought that
working with younger kids would be so interesting. There's a
difference in working with older group of kids and these younger
ones. There's more mix of fun and work here, you learn to see
things through kid's eyes and there's the wonder when they
exceed your expectation. These kids collaborated together from
concept to writing and designing the final product.

And as of my role, I help with checking and suggesting on technical
matters - how to build web pages, Flash, and final evaluation - but
that's not something much to worry about since I give my full trust
to this team and it proved well.
