Japanese Encephalitis
It is spread mainly by Culex tritaeniorhynchus. They like rice fields as homes and are infected with the cirus a flavivirus (related to Sr. Louis virus).
Mosquitoes are infected by biting infected pigs and wild birds. It mainly occurs in Asia.
Usually a person experiences a mild disease with fever and headache. In a few cases there is an acute onset of headache, high fever, stiff neck, lethargy, convulsions and 30% of these cases death occurs. Symptoms are usually present 5-15 days after infected bite.

Japanese Encephalitis is the leading cause of encephalitis in Asia.

Vaccination is recommended when you travel to areas where the disease is prevalent. Measures to prevent mosquito bites also are encourage; using DEET, wearing long sleeved clothing and staying away from domestic farm animals. There is no treatment available specifically for the disease but fever reducing medication, fluids and rest in mild cases. In severe cases hospitalization and supportive care is necessary.
