Land and Mud Slide: Necessary Government Response

Landslides and mudslides do not recognize borders, hence no single state or local actor has enough resources to single handedly deal with the disasters. There needs to be collaboration among the federal governments, its agencies, and the local governments.

The federal governments and their agencies need to proactively engage in research, training, information dissemination, regional assessments, development of new technology and methodology, warning and prediction. The agencies specifically should research and provide weather forecasts and assist in emergency response activities.

Local governments should reduce landslide losses through effective land-use planning and building. When disaster strikes, the local governments need to issue landslide warnings and manage emergency responses unless a national crisis is declared.
