It is very dangerous and difficult for humans to travel underwater so it’s a great advantage that robots are now being built to replace humans. They are being used to discover new life forms hundreds of meters under water, to experiment with the climate in the sea and to study undersea volcanoes and vents. Jason, an underwater robot is now being used to investigate hot vents in the Gulf of California and one of its best features is its data can immediately be downloaded for the internet. One of the best robots to do these tasks above is the ‘schilling robot’. This a robot with 2 arms used for maneuvering the robot. One of the arms is used to grip things, while the other is used to control the whole robot. Another type of robot is called a biomimetic (mimicking biology), which was developed by the North-eastern University Marine Science centre. This robot has sensors which are like animal sensors, light, pressure motion and controllers.
Warfare (robots used in the military) The military is a harsh and hazardous place for humans to be in, which makes it logical to make robots that we can use instead of humans when it comes to a time to fight.
Usually clowns or comedians would try to entertain humans, however robots are now being used to entertain people and many people find this quite unique and exciting. They are used in restaurants, to entertain people whilst their eating or waiting to be served or make a birthday or anniversary truly exhilarating. In amusement parks or family entertainment centers, a characteristic fun filled memory which no one will forget. Such as dancing bears, singing pirates which are mainly used in Disneyland. One of the newest entertainment successors is a ‘robot dinosaur’ named lucky which was first used in the August of 2003. He would walk on his hind legs and pull a rather large cart filled with filled with batteries however hidden by silk flowers on top. Disney says they really loved making this robot because it had loads of batteries stored on it’s cart so it would work for hours with recharging or stopping. One of my favourite amusement robots used today are Furby’s which are made by Sony. They have come to the market for approximately 10 years and are proven to be very popular worldwide. They are designed like real dogs and can move about. Another entertainment robot is one which has been made by Florida Robotics, it is remote-controlled, has speaker phones with camera ‘eyes’ and has a television in its tummy. It can also play pre-recorded jingles or display scrolling messages in parties wander around.
Its very useful to build robots for factories and other industrial jobs, because the can repeat a job for several years without getting tired or bored. Another benefit of using robots is they don’t have to necessarily be big to carry out tasks which involve physical strength, like some robots are around the size of a person and can pick things that are 100 pounds and also move them very quickly.
One of the most famous companies which makes robots is ‘Fanuc’. This company makes robots like these for welding, painting and also handling material they are also usually yellow in colour.
