Mdw Ntr Terms

Mdw Ntr is a system of writing used by the Kemetians, using a combination of logographic, syllabic, and alphabetic elements (definition came from www.answers.com).

Kemetian writing uses more than 2,000 Mdw Ntr characters. Each character represents an object in KMT. Mdw Ntr could stand for the sound of the object or it could stand for an idea that associates with the object.

Biliterals- Biliterals are hieroglyphs, which were substituted in place of pairs of alphabet characters. The sound of the biliteral hieroglyph is the same as the sound of the alphabet characters it replaces.

Standards- Hieroglyphic writing was written in columns or rows. Reading direction is determined by the direction that human and animal figures faced. Reading starts from the direction that figures face and continues in the opposite direction.
