Primary Education
Introduction
The Primary Education is the core six years of education that all children in Singapore would have to undergo. All Singaporean children are required by law to attend at least six years of compulsory education in schools.
Primary Education takes place in Primary Schools that are located all over Singapore in each neighbourhood. Primary Schools are usually located in the middle of heartlands so as to minimize transportation times for the pupils. There are currently 131 Government-Owned Primary Schools and 46 Government-Aided Primary Schools in Singapore. The large number of primary schools ensures that all pupils are able to find a place in a primary school and that there is at least one primary school that is close to each pupil’s home.
System Overview
The Primary School Education System comprises four years of Foundation Education, from Primary 1 to Primary 4 and two years of Orientation Education, from Primary 5 to Primary 6.
Foundation Education would provide the young children with adequate skills to communicate effectively and handle simple mathematical calculations. At the end of Primary 4, pupils would be streamed according to their academic inclinations and pupils would progress to the next stage of the education, the Orientation Stage.
The Orientation Stage of the Primary Education System serves to bridge the gap between the Foundation Stage and the Secondary Education System. Pupils in Primary 5 and 6, already sorted into their streams, would be exposed to higher levels of academic content to prepare them for their secondary school education.
At the end of Primary 6, all pupils would take the Primary School Leaving Examinations, or PSLE for short. This examination serves to assess each pupil’s academic abilities after having undergone the six years of primary education. With the results of the PSLE, pupils would then be posted to secondary schools of their choice, concluding their primary education.
