Pre-University Education
Introduction
After secondary school, the path of a student’s education process becomes much more diverse and complex. Some may prefer to go to specialized private institutes to hone and train special talents which they have acquired through the years. Some prefer to end their education quickly, choosing the Post-Secondary Education path while others want to gear up for university education, thus choosing the Pre-University Education path.
Pre-University Education is a stage after education staged after secondary education. However, unlike Post-Secondary Education where it normally is the ending point of the education process of the students, Pre-University Education prepares students for further education in universities.
System Overview
To do this, students are to take part in the Singapore-Cambridge General Certification of Education Advanced Level (GCE 'A' Level) Examinations at the end of their Pre-University Education process. This is a prestigious education qualification and the certificate received after taking the GCE 'A' Level Examinations is crucial in helping students find a suitable university of their choice. In addition, students who complete their Pre-University Education will also receive a school graduation certificate from their respective schools.
Students in this stage of education have to attend a 2 year course in junior Colleges or a 3 year course in Centralised Institutes, both of which lead to the GCE 'A' Level Examinations where they will then be graded and proceed to university education r other specialized education depending on their grade.
In a way, students taking Pre-University Education are still very much controlled in a school-like environment, where they have to wear uniforms and take specific subjects rather than courses which will gear them up for their career life. However, in an indirect way, Pre-University Education is gearing them for career life as they learn more in-depth details about the subjects pertaining to their future career choices.
Pre-University students have to continue taking at least one CCA, and their performance in their respective CCAs will be taken into account during university admission.
