Fire Ant Mounds

Fire ant hills are bigger than other ant hills, because they usually have two queens. When they have two queens they have twice the ants. That matters because fire ant hills size depend on how big the colony is.

Fire ants make they’re hills out of clay soils (which make the hill dome shaped) or sandy soils (which make the hill a not normal shape). Inside the hill are tunnels 2-5 inches wide and 50-100 feet long! That’s a long tunnel! The reason fire ants build such long tunnels is because they lead to different rooms in the hill. When the hill is first made there are three nurseries (to watch the young ants and larvae), two resting rooms (for the workers), one winter quarter (for when it’s cold), and one room for the queen. But as the colony grows, the ant hill grows bigger as the ants build more rooms (which are what they are usually doing).

The ants often build there hills in or on electric things because ants are attracted to electricity.
