Profession: Cashier register at the Wing Luke Asian Museum

We interviewed Jeannette because we wanted to see how much a cash register worker at the Wing Luke Asian museum actually knew about the International District. She happened to know a lot about the International District because she took American Ethnic Studies class.
1) What about Chinatown/ International District most represents you and why?
A: The Wing useum-it's the only pan-asian pacific american museum in the country and focuses on the history and culture of apas.
2) What past memory do you remember most about Chinatown/ International District?
A: Walking through the International District with Ron Chew and listening to his stories of what it was like to grow up in the International District/ Chinatown. Aslo visiting their old apartment in the International Districtto meet their first son, Cian, with Nori Catatay.
3) What do you know about Chinatown/ International District's history?
A: I've volunteered at the Wing Luke Asian Museum since 1993 and have worked here part time since 1997, so im pretty familar with the area and it's history. I also went through the Asian American studies program at North West American ethnic studies departments.
4) How was Chinatown/ International District changed since you have first remembered it? And when was the first time you saw Chinatown/ International District?
A: There is alot of new developement ( some term it as "gentrification" ) in the International District. And a shift to include more residential housing and social services. There are other areas that seem to be more run down in contrast and a lot of our elders have been passing on. I first remember the International District in 1981, so it's been 24 years.
5) Name something good in the past about Chinatown/ International District? Something bad?
A: Good: the mix of ethnicities and cultures found in the International District.
Bad: Crime and lack of funding for social services and historical preservation.
6) Name something good in the present about Chinatown/ International District? Something bad?
A: Good: greater investment in historical preservation ( the new Wing luke Museum ), social services and residential housing. Bad: crime and percieved lack of safety (need increased patrols by all areas of the International District.
