Filipino Immigrants

Filipino immigrant

24. Filipino immigrants entering International District. (Chin 44)

Filipino immigrants viewed life in the International District as a place to enjoy life. They found themselves living in hotels and boarding houses. But instead, they hit nothing but rock bottom. They were discriminated and worked under harsh conditions. This caused Filipino’s to make to make social organizations to have some fun other than work. These people came here for a new fresh start in life and they bumped into a disaster. They had to survive by working low wage jobs like servicing hotels, harvesting the fields, and canneries. (CIDBIA)

Many years later, they struggled in life. Some were recklessly attacked out of nowhere and had racist remarks made at them. Then some started to starve and begin to get sick. But most of them managed to use their survival skills and ended up living. Imagine a large community of Filipino’s living under one hotel. But now in the International district, the Filipino’s slightly dominate the population. Filipino’s now a day have made a big contribution to neighborhoods. They have made a huge cultural impact in the International District today. Spreading their culture around the International District has made them a big part of the community. Many Filipino minorities fill the streets till this very day and are very well accomplished in the business community. (Historic Easter Hotel)
