Issues in past of the International District
Continue on to today's issues
The International District had many problems in the past but most of them were fixed. But the big issue in the old days was public safety. Especially with the gambling and clubbing this influenced more crime. That’s the main reason why women’s and children never went out at night. It was too dangerous and it was really unpredictable when danger was going to strike in the International District.
Look at the Wah Mee Massacre, it was a disaster. It involved three Chinese Americans armed with firearms. They left the Wah Mee gambling place with thousands of dollars ended up killing 14 people in there. This crime could have easily set up danger for people who were out in the streets but most people were usually never out in the streets at night.
At night, many people were scared that they were going to get attacked and get their things stolen. There were a lot of racist attacks back then and people got away with it most of the time because there wasn’t enough police around to see what was going on. There was prostitution and dope selling was done in the International District and police still didn’t really catch anyone doing that stuff.
The main issue in the past is public safety because with that in hand, people would feel safer. With the feeling of being safe, parents can go out with their children to have fun at a park or something without getting attacked or being harassed by someone. Yet, they still didn’t manage to take action because the government could care less about that community. There were also gangs that went roaming around the streets at night so that they could interrogate people. That was nonsense but people still did it because they thought it was funny. (Doug Chin)
