Wonder Woman

    ·           Creator: William Moulton Marston (educational consultant) with his wife Sadie Marston (aka Elizabeth Holloway Marston)

    ·        Publisher: Max Charles Gaines

    ·        Names combined to create Charles Moulton

    ·        Artist: Harry G. Peter

    ·        When: December 1941 in the All Star Comics #8

    ·        Why: Marston observed that there were not enough female heroines compared to the abundant amount of male heroes. After inventing the polygraph or better know as the “lie detector”, Martson felt that woman were more honest and efficient workers. Due to his conclusion about women, he became an activists for women causes. In The American Scholar (issue 1943), Marston said:

"Not even girls want to be girls so long as our feminine archetype lacks force, strength, and power. Not wanting to be girls, they don't want to be tender, submissive, peace-loving as good women are. Women's strong qualities have become despised because of their weakness. The obvious remedy is to create a feminine character with all the strength of Superman plus all the allure of a good and beautiful woman."

Marston decided to create Diana, the Amazonian princess, whom was considered the blueprint of the perfect woman to combat the dislike girls had of being girls.
